News of the signing by President Michael D. Higgins of a warrant to grant a posthumous pardon to Myles Joyce (Maolra Seoighe), in relation to the Mám Trasna murders of 1882, has made headlines worldwide and the level of views of the TG4 docudrama chronicling the injustice, Murdair Mhám Trasna, has been substantial as well.

Mám Trasna Pardon Goes Global

10.04.18

The unprecedented, historic pardon has been covered by international media outlets such as SKY, BBC and others based in Britain, as well as the New York Times and Irish Central in the US. But perhaps more surprising is the level of interest from news outlets across the globe also, in places such as Brazil, Hungary, Indonesia, Switzerland and Russia.

This interest is matched by a relatively large viewership of the programme online. Since it was first screened on TG4 last Wednesday, the programme has been viewed extensively in the US and Britain, as well as in substantial numbers in Canada, Australia, Spain, France, the Netherlands, Germany, Japan, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates, to name but a few.

The feature length film Murdair Mhám Trasna, was commissioned by TG4 and co-funded by the BAI. It tells the story of the miscarriage of justice which ensued, due to perjury and bribery, after the brutal murder of five members of the same family in Mám Trasna in the West of Ireland in 1882, which eventually contributed to the fall of a British government. It had its television premiere last week on TG4 and is still available for viewing worldwide on the TG4player at www.tg4.ie/mmt.

Murdair Mhám Trasna, is based on the book ‘Éagóir’, written by former Language Commissioner, Seán Ó Cuirreáin, directed by Colm Bairéad and produced by Ciarán Ó Cofaigh of ROSG.

Here are a sample of the articles published by news outlets worldwide on this story.
